ROAD TO E3 2012 #1: PAST AND FUTURE OF THE BIG 3

Jecht:

Nintendo Revolution is still a better name.

Willy:

Well, it was an excellent code name. It sold the premise of the system.

Jecht:

Wii is a very stupid name. It will always be a stupid name. Wii U is even worse. They are begging for market confusion.

Willy:

Wii was a very good name, it sounded like “we”. It sounded new, and it made it standout and be iconic. Wii U leaves a lot to be desired though.

Jecht:

That’s it. I’m out. Willy, you are the best troll ever, I concede.

Willy:

Jecht, this is not something you disagree with. What happened, happened.

Silvur:

‘We’ sounded like new?

Willy:

For a gaming system? Yes. For a device you can buy? Yes.

Jecht:

Willy speaks in tongues.

DarkLink:

It’s still an incredibly stupid name.

Jecht:

Anyway, Wii U is not only lazy, it WILL cause market confusion, and they will end up selling less.

Willy:

The name has already created market confusion, back at E3 2011. It will be Nintendo’s job to get people to learn the difference between it and the Wii if they decide to keep the Wii U name, otherwise they will have another disaster like the 3DS launch.

Blizzvalve:

Nintendo did very little to differentiate between the Wii and Wii U at E3. I thought it was a tablet controller for the Wii when I first saw it.

Willy:

Most people did. Their conference was a mess.

Blizzvalve:

They need to refer to the Wii U as a new console instead of a new controller.

Jecht:

I liked their conference, it had Zelda. ❤

Willy:

The Zelda orchestra was really nice.

Blizzvalve:

They had the best E3 conference last year, but only because everyone else’s conferences were so terrible in comparison.

Willy:

Yes, but I think they have yet to make one that was as good as their E3 2006 conference.

Jecht:

I still think Sony had the best conference last year. Microsoft’s conference sucked as usual, and Nintendo’s was weird, but had nice fan service as always.

DarkLink:

But they gave no details on the actual hardware of the system, or what it actually was. All we saw was a controller.

D4W1L4H:

I bet they didn’t even want to show it at first.

Blizzvalve:

They shouldn’t have showed it, it wasn’t ready for prime time. But if they hadn’t shown it, Nintendo would have had nothing to show at E3.

Jecht:

They had a proof of concept video, and said it would have a resistant touch screen, even though some of what they showed is not even possible on a resistant touch screen!

Willy:

I like how Sony gets their audience audibly react and scream during their conferences, it’s something they got from Nintendo that they themselves haven’t been able to do well recently. And yeah, when he said that no games on the show floor were meant to be released, it showed that this was too early.

D4W1L4H:

From last E3 ’till now, the only thing they’ve told us was Nintendo Network, and that was only because it was stretching over to the 3DS.

DarkLink:

Nintendo is not Sony, though. They don’t announce junk for no reason.

Aljosa:

E3 will be awesome this year.

Willy:

Well, Nintendo and Sony will be. Microsoft will suck hard.

DarkLink:

Willy is right. I just want some Halo 4 info. Beyond that, I know they wont show anything I care about.

Blizzvalve:

I have a feeling E3 is going to suck this year. Microsoft is going to be nothing but Kinect stuff again; Sony is going to be boring as usual; and I don’t know if the Wii U will end up being good or not.

D4W1L4H:

I have 3 widgets on my desktop. Each of which are counting down (in seconds) to the big E3 conferences: Sony, Nintendo, and Ubisoft.

Jecht:

Sony will announce the next Playstation.

Blizzvalve:

I doubt it, Jecht. They are still releasing a ton of games for the PS3.

Jecht:

Then you’re an idiot.

Willy:

They will have to announce one.

Jecht:

If you don’t think their next gen consoles will all be at this E3, then you are delusional.

DarkLink:

Sony at the very least will show something for PS4. They kinda have to, but Microsoft however might not.

Blizzvalve:

They already said that they won’t be at this year’s E3.

Jecht:

Yeah, they said that in 2004 too.

Willy:

Microsoft is fine with just the 360 for now, since it’s basically still a new system after it’s Kinect reboot.

Jecht:

Microsoft doesn’t want to be a game company anymore.

DarkLink:

Damn, Jecht beat me to it.

Blizzvalve:

Makes sense, the Kinect is still going strong.

Aljosa:

Microsoft sucks now because they look at videogames as a service.

DarkLink:

Jecht is right.

Jecht:

Microsoft wants to make you pay for Gold to get free services.

DarkLink:

They want the Xbox to be a do everything in your living room box. They couldn’t care less about supporting it with software.

Jecht:

They will never be able to until the Xbox has an F-81 RF outlet on the back.

DarkLink:

This is true, but that’s what they want, and they’re using the 360 to get the software and user base in place. But next gen, you can be damn sure that’s what they’re gonna do from the beginning.

Blizzvalve:

I still don’t expect next-gen consoles to be revealed this year. Most likely next year, I think. If anything, they’ll briefly mention it, but not show anything for it.

Jecht:

I don’t think they can wait that long to announce them.

DarkLink:

Sony can’t. Microsoft….probably could, but they shouldn’t. They could though….

Jecht:

Sony could. But they shouldn’t.

Blizzvalve:

I agree that next-gen needs to start soon, this generation is really beginning to get stale.

Jecht:

We need new hardware desperately.

DarkLink:

Not sure if I want it, though. Everything is just going to become more expensive.

Aljosa:

I don’t think I’m going to get a new console until the Wii U is under $300.

Jecht:

I’m going to wait this time too.
