RUMOR: STEAM BRANDED CONSOLE IN THE WORKS?
The Verge is speculating that Valve is collaborating with hardware partners to create a ‘Steam Box’; a Windows HTPC (Home Theater PC) with ‘basic’ specs as a Core i7 CPU, 8 GB of RAM, and an Nvidia GPU.
The HTPC should be able to run any standard PC games, as well as allow support for 3rd party online services, such as EA’s Origin.
The Verge also speculates that it will ship with a proprietary controller, possibly based on a patent Valve filed last year.
This comes following the announcement of the ‘Big Picture Mode’ for Steam announced last year, which has yet to make it’s debut. This mode would allow a special interface designed for TV’s in mind.
If The Verge is correct in it’s speculation that this product exists, expect it at either GDC or E3.
